3 Steps to Organize Your Garage

Most of us are guilty of using our garage as a place to store almost everything. Over time garages tend to fill up with clutter, yard tools, kids sporting goods, and much more. Although many of us dream of having an organized garage, it can be daunting to clear out the space. The team at Parker Design Build offers you three steps to organize your garage.

  1. Clearing out Space

Before you begin to organize your garage, it is a good idea to think about how you want to use the space. Do you need more room for your cars? Do you need storage for seasonal items? Once you have determined your goals for your garage, you will need to begin clearing out space. It is a good idea to create separate areas to put the items you want to throw away, sell, donate, and keep. Depending on the state of your garage, you may want to rent a dumpster.

2. Cleaning

You will likely be surprised by how dirty your garage is, especially if you tend to leave your garage door open. You will want to take everything out of your garage so that you can thoroughly clean the space. It is a good idea to inspect your garage for any signs of rodents, pests, or water damage. Once you do this, you can vacuum and scrub the floors, paying close attention to the corners. If you have a larger space, you can use a hose to spray down the flooring and then mop.

3. Organization

Once you have cleared everything out and cleaned your garage, it is time to de-clutter and organize. Using color-coded labels and boxes will help you know where your possessions are. It is essential not to mix items in larger containers, or you will forget where they are! Make sure to use smaller boxes to hold items you use more frequently. You will also want to place these in an easy-to-reach location. You may find it helpful to map out your storage plan before putting things in bins. This can help you know what size and how many boxes you need.

Considerations

In addition to these three steps, to organize your garage there are several factors you should consider. First, this process may take you a few days to complete. It is a good idea to pay attention to the weather when you plan to organize your garage. You need to be able to move everything outside and onto the driveway. Finally, when you start organizing your possessions, you should consider taking advantage of the wall space. Shelving units and wall-mounted storage make excellent use of space. As you are putting things away, remember to include sports equipment, gardening supplies, and home improvement tools at the lowest level. You can store holiday or seasonal items at medium height, and childhood memorabilia or old documents should be placed at the top.

If you still do not have enough storage space in your garage, Parker Design Build can help! We can create a garage addition that will allow you to store your belongings, cars, and even extra living space. Looking for ideas?
