Whole House Renovation in Greenspring
Nestled between the Worthington Valley and Greenspring area of Owings Mills, Maryland, Bird and JP Bishop’s home had everything they wanted in a family residence—except the style that truly felt like “theirs.” The couple, owners of a well-known Baltimore auto family dealership, had recently relocated to be closer to their son’s school at Calvert Hall. They found a house with great bones and a solid layout, but it was undeniably dated. Nearly every room needed a refresh to match their existing furniture and reflect their personal taste. What began as a targeted cosmetic update quickly evolved into a complete interior renovation, exterior painting, and new deck build—finished right on schedule in August.
Bird and JP had worked with Chris Parker of Parker Design Build Remodel on a previous home renovation project, so when it came time to transform this new home, there was no question who they would call. “I love the renovation process,” Bird explains, “and I had done a renovation with Chris before, so I knew he could do exactly what we wanted.” The result is a stunning, cohesive family haven that feels custom-built for their lifestyle—without the usual remodeling headaches. Here is their renovation story.
The Client Experience: Why They Chose Parker
Bird and JP knew the house had strong potential, but the dated finishes and lack of modern functionality were not conducive. “The house was great – but very dated,” Bird recalls. “The layout was perfect and every room would accommodate our existing furniture—we just had to change the aesthetics, colors, and design to make the house feel like our home.”
They reached out to Chris Parker as soon as they purchased the home. Having experienced his work firsthand, they appreciated Parker Design Build’s transparent, client-first approach. Unlike other remodelers they had worked with in the past, Chris and his team didn’t leave them guessing about costs, timelines, or outcomes. “Chris has such great capabilities,” Bird notes. “We work really well together.” The decision was easy since they knew Parker’s approach was known for its precision, reliable subcontractors, and commitment to making the entire experience pleasant rather than disruptive.
From the start, Bird and JP emphasized that they weren’t looking for a total gut job—just thoughtful updates that would feel more like home. Chris’s team listened carefully and delivered exactly that.
The Design Phase: Vision Brought to Life
Bird enjoys the design process, but she also knew that she could rely on Chris to bring some fresh ideas to the table. “Chris usually has great insight into spaces,” Bird says. “We tried to limit the scope of work because of our time frame. We tasked Chris to turn this around in less than four months—May to August—so tile, vanity, and fixtures were updated where it made sense.”
One standout moment came in the two-story foyer. The existing walls featured a lot of molding that left awkward empty spaces with no art to fill them. Chris designed a new molding treatment that perfectly balanced the architecture and created visual interest. In the eat-in kitchen, an odd ceiling issue was transformed into a beautiful design feature rather than simply painted over. “He came up with a better solution that had more design aesthetic,” Bird remembers.
The TV area around the existing fireplace was another highlight. Bird asked if a built-in was possible. Chris not only said yes—he designed custom built-ins that completely reimagined the look and feel of the room. The heavy, dated cast or cement-looking mantle was replaced with something far more elegant. Throughout the home, the design team interpreted Bird’s vision flawlessly. “Chris entire team is so cohesive and ready to please,” she says.
Smart home features were integrated seamlessly during the renovation too, adding modern convenience without sacrificing the home’s character. Custom millwork, cabinet painting, and an enlarged kitchen island elevated the project beyond a typical remodel. Even the hood over the stove received a beautiful custom treatment.
Main Floor Transformation
The main floor received comprehensive cosmetic upgrades that transformed daily living spaces. The kitchen, mudroom, both powder rooms, and walk-in pantry were refreshed with new finishes, lighting, and thoughtful details. The existing three-season sunroom was converted into a custom craft room—perfect for Bird’s quilting hobbies.
New railing balusters were installed throughout for an updated, transitional look. The dining room bar area was upgraded, and entirely new lighting and paint refreshed every surface. A brand-new front door unit welcomed guests in style.
Exteriors with Curb Appeal
The entire exterior was painted, with new black accents on shutters, gutters, and metal roof creating a crisp two-tone color update that dramatically improved curb appeal. Bird indicated that, “We are preparing to be empty nesters in the coming years, so every aspect of the renovations were done with consideration for the long-term or resale value.”
Second Floor Refresh
Upstairs, the focus was on the private spaces the family uses every day. Their son’s bath and the primary bath were remodeled with consideration for keeping the scope and budget manageable. The primary bath cabinetry was refinished to save costs while still looking brand new. A new primary bedroom bar and fireplace surround added luxury and functionality. Closets were updated too, complemented by fresh flooring, updated lighting, and a complete paint refresh. The entire primary bath was transformed and now has the coastal feel that Bird loves.
Bird and JP were deliberate about the scope of work. “We did not want to replace everything, so we trimmed and repurposed, where possible. Chris helped with this goal—he painted cabinets, which now look brand new, which saved a few dollars, too.” Chris’s guidance kept the project efficient, without sacrificing quality.
Basement Reimagined as Family Space
The basement underwent one of the most dramatic changes. An old bar and load-bearing wall were removed, and a steel beam was installed to open up the entire floor plan. The result is a bright, airy layout perfect for gathering. A new kitchenette, a dry bar and a wet bar now enhance the space for entertaining. Custom walnut TV built-ins were actually designed and built by Chris for their previous home. These were repurposed in the new space to support a stylish haven for football games, movie nights, and relaxation.
Overcoming Challenges with Transparency and Expertise
Every renovation has its moments, but Bird says Chris made them almost unnoticeable. “He communicates so effectively—and I really appreciate that Chris always provides me with choices and solutions,” she says. “The project was on-time and on-budget. Actually, anything that went over budget was my fault—not his. We also had a hiccup with the flooring—but Chris made everything right.”
Bird and JP never felt overwhelmed, even though it was a large undertaking. “A whole house renovation like this can be overwhelming,” she emphasizes, “but I know that when you work with someone like Chris, it’s truly a beautiful process. We have done renovations with other contractors in the past and they were always problematic. Nothing compares to Chris’ transparency, efficiency, and knowledge. He has talented and capable subs too. Everything happens according to schedule and his precision and detail-oriented approach are magnificent!”
A Home Perfectly Suited to Their Lifestyle
Today, Bird and JP’s home effortlessly supports their busy lives. The open, updated spaces make entertaining easy too. The craft room, built-ins, and smart features enhance everyday comfort. Most importantly, it feels like *their* home—warm, functional, and stylish.
Best Advice for People Considering Renovating
When asked what advice she would give someone considering a renovation, Bird is unequivocal: “Only work with Chris—he’s truly makes remodeling a pleasant experience. I’ve done enough remodeling projects to know the difference between a great experience and a nightmare. I truly enjoy working with him. People just don’t understand how disruptive it can be—and that’s what separates Chris— his team understands that, and has mastered the ability to minimize that disruption and make it pleasant. The design team is so helpful and Chris is great at working with clients and their interior designers too. I’m not working with anyone but Chris.”
