Elegant Renovation in Ellicott City

When Kavita and Pravin sought to purchase their new home in Ellicott City, they loved the European character of the exterior. The house was elegant from the street, but inside it was dated and less than dramatic. They could see the possibilities, but they knew it would take a skilled contractor to execute their vision, on a pretty fast-paced schedule.  Here’s their story.

Remodeling Right Away in Ellicott City

Knowing the design process could take time, Katvita and Pravin began searching for a remodeler before they even closed on the purchase of the house.  They wanted the renovation work to begin as soon as they owned the house. In just five months, Parker Design Build Remodel completed a major renovation that included a full kitchen redesign plus the family room, mudroom, two powder rooms, and thoughtful updates to the library and sunroom. The project finished four days ahead of schedule and on budget.

Looking for a High-Quality Remodeler

Kavita and Pravin first encountered Parker’s work in another Ellicott City home they toured while house-hunting. They lost the contract on that home, but they kept thinking about the quality and level of finish. After they found the house in Ellicott City that they eventually purchased, they asked the Real Estate agent to find out who had renovated the previous home. That homeowner was happy to share Parker’s information.

While they interviewed several contractors, Chris Parker stood out immediately.  “We were about to close on our new home and asked if he would come out and review our vision so we could begin the design process,” they recall. Chris walked the space, explained what was possible, and left them with a clear sense of how to improve the aesthetic. He laid out his design-build process and explained how and why this process would provide them a precise renovation roadmap, a solid budget and a timeline, months in advance.

Most of the other contractors offered loose timelines and ballpark numbers. Chris was detail-oriented, and his process and schedule were sound. He was confident he could finish on time and on budget. Other contractors, however, would not make that commitment.

“We had heard nightmares about remodeling projects gone wrong. Chris’s transparency around budget and pre-planning built a lot of confidence and trust. Although he was not the lowest bid, we realized quickly that he could be relied upon and was very knowledgeable. We also realized the lower bids were probably going to end up exactly where Chris said the project would cost anyway.”

Why the Design/Build Process Is So Different

Kavita and Pravin wanted more light, better flow, and a consistent level of architectural finish throughout the house. They met with Chris and his team to discuss which walls could come down and relied on their judgment about structure and foundation. As part of the design/build process, plans were drafted. Once those were finalized, the couple began working with the design team on kitchen and cabinet concepts.

That phase felt different from a typical remodel. The kitchen designer came to the house with samples, discussed layouts, and produced 3D renderings. “They were patient with us until the plan was finalized,” the homeowners say.

One important goal was to widen and open the kitchen. That meant removing load-bearing walls and installing a new structural support beam all the way to the basement. Chris presented the options, the structural reality, and workable solutions.

“The design/build process helped us make more informed decisions, with full transparency about the cost and complexity. When we moved forward, we not only felt confident in our decision but fully understood the scope. And, as usual, Chris was right on target with the estimated costs.”

That is why the design/build process keeps a project running smoothly. Possibilities are explored up front, before demolition begins, which minimizes surprises and creates a better client experience.

Millwork, Mood, and Smart Value Engineering

Kavita chose Parker, in part, for his capabilities but the level of finish evident in his millwork, built-ins, and paint was truly exceptional. The design team delivered custom cabinetry, crown moulding, and trim throughout the home which really felt cohesive.

One example started with inspiration photos for a European-style sink in a powder room. “I showed Chris what I wanted, and he worked with the stone fabricator, Rocktops, to design a truly custom piece,” Kavita says. “Parker’s woodshop was able to build anything we threw at them. I had a folder of more than 450 inspiration images, and he incorporated elements of those design ideas into every room.”

The library was another case of design judgment meeting budget. The couple wanted a moody, dramatic space in the library, but all-new built-ins just were not feasible, for their desired budget. So, Chris suggested redesigning the existing built-ins and updating elements instead.

In the butler’s pantry—originally slated to be gutted—he proposed more value engineering concepts by removing the doors, resurfacing the cabinets, adding new glass, and a very specific painting process that would elevate everything in that area – the paint literally has a glass finish!   The refinished bar area, in particular, now draws constant compliments.

“There was constant communication about design, and we felt Chris was personally invested in helping us keep the renovation and design cohesive throughout every space,” they say. “He even switched out existing molding in one room to match the new molding in another.” His solutions-oriented approach kept the project on budget without sacrificing their vision.

A Tidy Site, a Realistic Timeline, and No Budget Surprises

“When we first met with Chris, he explained that he only works with trade partners that understand his approach and provide the same level of respect and quality for the project.  We got to know the crew and saw the way they respected our home.  The work area was cleaned up every night.  It was clearly evident that he chooses his partners wisely,” reflects Kavita.

The job finished four days early and followed Chris’s daily schedule, which had even built in time for flooring to cure and paint to dry. “The execution was flawless, and we stayed on budget—except for some extras we chose to add along the way,” Kavita adds.

A Home That Fits How They Live

“Chris really created the home we imagined,” they say. “It is aesthetically and functionally who we are—suited to our busy professional lifestyle and especially family time with our two boys. Every space is elevated and cohesive – and finished to a level that is really special.”

Sitting in the finished kitchen, Kavita thinks back on the journey – the communications, the details, and decisions along the way. “Chris is so detail-oriented and meticulous, with a great eye for design. As I reflect on the renovation journey, it is with very fond memories. There were no contractor nightmares, and that is a real testament to the way Parker does business. The journey, the product, and the experience were very special.”

Advice for Anyone Considering a Renovation

“We would highly recommend Chris and his team to anyone considering a major home improvement,” Kavita says. “The integrity, quality, professionalism, transparency, and attention to detail are beyond belief—and they take great pride in their work. We have never had a contractor experience like this.”

This Ellicott City renovation shows what Parker Design Build Remodel does when clients already love the bones and the exterior: bring the interior up to the same standard with custom millwork, honest budgeting, and a process that stays on time. The house that felt unfinished now feels like the elegant, functional home Kavita and Pravin imagined before they even closed.
